Ramp & Roll
“Guess first: will the ball reach the cup?”
Two balls start from the same mark, one on smooth wood and one on a rough rug. Your child guesses which will roll farther, then lets them go.
What your child does
- Guess first: Your child says which ball will roll farther before anything moves.
- Test it: Both balls start at the top of their lanes, from the same mark, and roll.
- Try again: Rona asks which lane will stop the ball right on the mat, and your child tries one.
The problem-solving skill: running a fair test
Keeping the start the same and changing only the surface is the idea behind a fair test: change one thing and see what it does.
Try it at home
Lean a board on a sofa cushion and roll a toy car down it, once on the bare board and once with a towel laid over it. Ask your child to guess first, then try it together.
Ramp & Roll is one of the workshops in the Brielle’s World app for iPhone and iPad, which is coming soon to the App Store. You can visit it now on the clay island.
