Steady Tank
“Where will the water be when I say now? Put your mark.”
A tap pours into a tank. Your child puts a mark where they think the water will be when Rona says “now”, then pours and compares.
What your child does
- Guess first: Your child places a mark on the side of the tank.
- Test it: The water pours, and the mark and the water line sit side by side.
- Try again: Same tap, wider tank. Your child guesses again and sees how the wider tank changes it.
The problem-solving skill: estimating, then checking
Making an estimate, looking at the gap and adjusting the next guess. This is an early, hands-on look at how fast something fills over time.
Try it at home
Fill two different cups from the same tap for a slow count of five and compare how high the water gets. Ask your child to guess first, then try it together.
Steady Tank is one of the workshops in the Brielle’s World app for iPhone and iPad, which is coming soon to the App Store. You can visit it now on the clay island.
